Frequently Asked Questions
- Who can compete?
Any Pennsylvania youth wrestler may enter an Area qualifier. Wrestlers must reside in their Area to compete in that Area’s qualifier. You do not have to be part of a school or club team to enter.
- How old does my child have to be to compete?
The Youth division ranges in age from 8 to 12 years old for both boys and girls divisions. The Junior High division is for those athletes who fall under PIAA Junior High Eligibility Rules.
- Who advances to the state championships?
For the Youth Boys division, the top three advance to the state championships while the youth girls advance two. In the Junior High division, the top four place winners advance for boys while the girls advance the top two.
- How can I register my child?

- Does my wrestler need to wear a headgear to compete?
Yes. Headgear is mandatory.
- How much are the registration fees?
The cost to enter the qualifier is $35. If your wrestler(s) advances to the state championships, some areas charge a gear fee while others may require a deposit. Please contact your Area Chairman for details.
Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling
Providing youth, an opportunity to participate in the sport of wrestling. It is not only the goal of PJW to develop wrestlers but also to contribute to the development of the moral, physical, mental, and emotional attitudes of young people as they develop toward adulthood.
