Subject: Who is Sucking thin to get a win ?
Are you really healthy and at the top of your game sucking 5 or more pounds?. I think you would be dry and lethargic and probably loose in OT against a natural weight competitor at the top of his game. So sucking down and still don't take first is not worth it right?

Depends on the kids weight. If it is healthy for a 120lb. kid to drop to the 105 lb. bracket not just for wrestling but because his doctor tells him that he is over weight and provides the right advice and way to go about it, he drops the weight THE RIGHT WAY, he is now the predator at that division due to the fact that the kid is eating right, exercising, and has more energy due to the fact that he doesn't have an extra 15 lbs. No kid should ever drop weight in a hurry. It takes months of correct training, and nutrition and knowledge to get in shape, and stay in shape. That's just my opinion, I could be wrong......

that was a very good answer

Not sure, I have already sucked out 65 and I figure I have another 65 to go. I'll let you know when I am done if it was worth it :)

Are you talking about a high school kid or a chubby little kid? I dont think it would be very healthy for a high school 120lb wrestler to lose 15 pound. A little chubba wubba could do it tho!

Just trying to figure the concept here, not talking about chubby kids . . Just people I know dropping a weight class down for the big tournament. I can see if you are 2 pounds over , , but a whole weight class and still do not get the gold, you would think it was because of sucking 5 pounds of weight. maybe he is not at full power there? are you really stronger after a week or 2 of drying up? you weigh in the night before then try to shove food down his throat. Just want to know if it is worth it.

What could possibly be considered a big tournament for a kid? No tournament - including PJWs - means a thing when you get to HS. If you want your kid wrestling when he is 15, wrestle him the next weight up and be positive about whatever he achieves.

Good advice rickybobby! I think cutting weight hurts a kid more then it helps him.

I agree...weight cutting not a good idea...natural healthy weight is best competitive weight.

The third period will tell the tale in the later rounds. A pound, or two, really just system cleansing. But 5, 6, way too far. Kids do "ALOT" better when they have a "LITTLE" input about a decision like that.

Unless you weigh well over 100 and at least in JH you should not even consider a 5 pound drop if you are truly looking out for your kids health and welfare.

One thing that I've noticed over 20 yrs of doing this, behind nearly ever boy cutting too much weight is a psycho parent.
Reply By cradleking --(209.158.7.91)--
Pulling 5lbs. never killed anyone. Most kids could lose that in a day.
Reply By THEDMAN --(206.197.62.9)--
I am with the mind set that you wind up wreslting the same kids anyway. You cut a few pounds so does everyone else. Stay at your natural weight let your skills take you where they take you. When your young and over power people you learn less moves. Then when you get older it hurts your wrestling.
Reply By THEDMAN --(206.197.62.9)--
sorry you wind up wrestling the same kids not "wreslting"

Cutting weights one way through training! Maybe you think 5lbs is alot in the "kids" program, but its really not. Good 7th and 8th graders in PJWs usually cut around 10bs, still not anything. Wait till they get in highschool the top competitors cutt anywhere from 10-25lbs off there natural well shaped body. The only time cutting weight hurts you is if you don't have the mental edge to do it.
Reply By redshirthgh --(108.2.184.46)--
No disrespect intended to you but 7 & 8 th grade are still development years. And for a 13 year old to cut 10 pounds is pretty weak in my book. All of this to place at a youth tournament. I am curios how the conversation goes when this is decided. (DAD)well son , I think you need to drop 10 pounds because your wrestling skills suck and you don't stand a chance to make it out of our area. Besides your mom says you are looking a little heavy in the belly for a 70 pounder uh.(SON)but dad, you said when you left me back a grade that it would make me tougher and that I would be able to beat anyone.(DAD)yea son anyone in your grade!
Reply By redshirthgh --(108.2.184.46)--
Unless you are talking about the boys that are over 120 pounds they may actually be able to drop 5-8 pounds at that age.

redshirthigh that was GREAT

I have elementry wrestlers who have cut weight simply by extra excercise and cutting out fast food, candy, soda, and all the other crap out there. Basically changing to a healthy diet and not being a couch potato will do it. No starving, no sauna suits. If you are educated, you can have kids cut weight in a healthy way and not overnight. And it's not specific to wrestling. I see it more in youth football.

Sucking weight, I don't think anyone should suck weight.
Elementary kids and junior high shouldn't even worry about it, from past experience it makes you dislike the sport. When wrestling season starts a proper diet should be followed and zero meals skipped. Hydration is imperative, there is no way you should avoid drinking water to make weight. By working out and following a good diet, your weight class should be clear.

YES KEEP IT TRUE IF YOU ARE A COACH AND YOUR SON IS OK AND ONE BRACKET AND YOU MAKE HIM LOSE WEIGHT TO AND I QUOTE GET HIS FIRST TITLE AT OUR LEAGUE TOURNAMENT WAWA AND STAYING AT 60 POUNDS IT WOULD BE TOUGH TO GET A WIN BUT 55 WOULD BE EASIER. TO HELL WITH THE TWO KIDS I HAVE COACHED ALL YEAR AT 55 POUNDS AND WORKED HARD FOR ME. MY SON COMES FIRST SO HE GETS A NUMBER 2 RANKING AND THE TWO KIDS WHO HAVE EARNED THEIR RANKING BY WRESTLERS IN THERE WEIGHT CLASS GET 11 AND 9 RANKING AND THE COACH NOT CARE. I AM NOT THE COACH OF THIS TEAM BUT AS A PARENT I WOULD BE VERY PISSED ABOUT THIS. WHAT DOES THIS FORM THINK

there is a fine line between sucking weight and being a lean machine if a kid is not eating and barely drinking and walking around like a zombie to cut five pounds NO GOOD if a kid decides to drop a weight bracket by eating five or six well planned meals and is drinking 4 to 6 oz of water every 2 to 3 hours and maybe even hitting a home workout before school or after practice to get to or stay at 6% body fat with a clean system then GOOD that shows dedication to something they want to succeed at
Reply By pwrestler9 --(71.116.38.142)--
If u drink 4 to 6 ounces of water every 2 hours YOU WILL NEVER MAKE WEIGHT! wrestle weight loss is all water weight. Cutting weight to an extent never killed anyone
Reply By wrestlercoach --(68.171.234.176)--

I'd be careful about making such wreckless comments. Don't care the excuse or the method, if you are not in HS and are in good shape, dropping only a few % of your body weight through water loss or calorie reduction can out real strain on your body's vital organs.
Reply By gsms34 --(69.40.178.61)--
true but the well planned diet but include the right amount of calories body weight X 13 is a min and about the water yes you will make weight you only reduce the water thirty hours before a weigh in gotta stay hydrated
