Original Post By Smom (24.3.100.166) February 02, 2010 Subject: Worst Tourney???? Ok after looking at some of the post on the worst touney some have been to I have to laugh!
1st-Officials have been the worst this year of any of the years we have been wrestling. A Ref where we wrestled yesterday was Brought out of hell from under a rock and was given an officials shirt. He was actually Screaming at kids. When guestioned about a rule he yelled at a coach. How dare someone guestion him HAHA! The guy from King Pin could have fit in an officials shirt and could have done a better job with reading the rules once.
2nd. Unless you know how the food is going to be go prepared. Some places just don't get it.
3rd Trophies aren't everything. Yesterday the peice of metel given to JH couldn't even have the date and weight put on it. Very cheap!
4th After starting well over and HOUR late we had kids not wrestle for hours. Even with running four mats
5th Some like this tourny get worse every year. Compitition was down and not worth it anymore. Use to bring in tons of outsiders.
6th Yes after one of the highest entry fees and admission fees and waiting for hours a lot of kids only got 2 matches and that was with joining 2 weight classes.
Officials get a lot of crap but if you would know the rules and go by them and not just miss thing when its convenient for one wrestler you would not hear the screaming. Where did all the good officials go cause we haven't seen many around here. Yesterday for 1st a kid had another kid pinned for over 15 seconds and it was never called. I watched the video and the kid was stacked. So yes I think ppl have a right to speak about the horrible officials. Reply By papride --(67.20.180.62)-- If your looking for a good tourney the Corry tournament does a good job every year. Silent tourney, Top 100, 2 gyms, always enough food and nice awards from the kids, with decent competition. We go every year.
Reply By headlockmom58 --(98.236.58.98)-- Where is Corry?
Reply By papride --(67.20.180.62)-- Northwestern corner of the state. Area 8, about 35 minutes south east of Erie.
Reply By papride --(67.20.180.62)-- It is kinda close to the New York line. Usually a couple kids from Ohio and New york.
Reply By Smom --(24.3.100.166)-- I am sure there are several out there that are good. It just stinks taking kids to a tournament that use to be ok and was worth it for the competition and have that kind of a day. My biggist thing sorry to say is the officials that are around this year. The JH matches are just as bad and something surely can be done. I'm sure there is also good Refs out there! One coach said it best yesterday...."You can't beat the kid and the ref" That says great things. These kids are not novice, they know if they have a pin or not so stop ripping kids off and read the rules. Getting to the mat and looking helps too most of the time!

Northeast Nationals is guilty of this one.
Reply By Smom --(24.3.100.166)-- Don't get me wrong I know Trophies aren't everything! My oldest doesn't even want TROPHIES he likes metals and placs. (take up less room) But if your giving the kids something atleast put the age, date and weight. Thats all the want to keep so they look back years later and see how they improved each year at the same one!
Reply By Raider1 --(75.117.144.90)-- Smom it sounds like you have the Ref-ing all figured out. Sounds like you know all the rules. If you go to the PIAA site it shows you how to go about becoming a PIAA official. You can make a difference.

Get over yourself! Are you one of those horrible refs I am refering to???? Are you affended? Then guess what go back to training. I have never said refs have it easy but they chose to do it. You sound like you know everything reading several other post so get a life!
Reply By onthemat --(71.162.43.247)-- Smom - I was in the same boat with the medals not having information on them. I went to Walmart and bought an engraver for less than $20 and now engrave anything that my son wins and doesn't have the information on it.
Reply By Badcat --(65.112.250.245)-- Officials have it rough, and I certainly would never want to be in their shoes on the weekends. For $50 - $65 for a day, to have to put up with 6 hours of constant focus...not for me. I've seen some very poor refereeing this year as well, not calling chokes (Blantant handfull of throat) to the cry/scream rule being called constantly. My son had a sure Pin called off over a scream rule violation, the kid jumped up like nothing was wrong...my son still won 7-4 but the match could have gone either way.
Reply By area6fan --(98.16.74.124)-- $50.00 or $60.00???? almost every day long tourney pays a rate of $150.00 per official and most schools pay a wage per hour after working 8 hours... example $150.00 from 9am. up to and thru 5pm. and then $15.00/hr from 5pm on.and a lot of schools feed the officials for no charge, depending on the school.
Reply By sgt%20slaughter --(72.77.106.199)-- Area 6 is much more accurate unless you are paying high school kids
Reply By afw --(68.84.56.165)-- I know about 150 per ref.
Thats 600 for three mats.
There is nothing wrong with that rate; +/- 6-7 hours work max.
There should always be a rotating official for breaks with an agreement they rotate evenly and without asking... mat to mat; not stay on one.
And their word that in the finals; they call a fair game - not just to get it over with...and get home.

Reply By Liondad --(71.60.158.110)-- We were at a tourney recently and watched a ref call back points while standing and I swear to god this happened he slammed his foot down on the mat for the pin. I wish I had a camcorder at the time.
we were at Shade-Central City this year and my 10-year old was wrestling he hit a lat drop and as soon as the other boys shoulders hit the ref slammed his hand down. It was a novice tournament. I walked over the father and I said that was my boy and I'm glad he won but I apologize for that call it was horrible, the kid had no chance to even fight it it was literally like one second. usually at Novice tournaments kids are given several seconds, you'll see refs lift up a shoulder or turn a kid to keep the match going or whatever, but this guy was mowing them down back points were being handed out like candy corn on Halloween.
i will say this every tournament that we have been to with the group of refs from Westmoreland County has been great. Those guys are all on the same page and they are a well oiled machine. i don't even know their names one is Mike and he has glasses I believe, but they do a great job.
Reply By Badcat --(65.112.250.245)-- I meant $150-$160...not sure why I forgot the "1"...
LionDad...at least Hasselrig (Not sure of the relation to Carlton) isn't refereeing anymore...no one liked that guy. In a Junior High match, McDowell from Blairsville took a swing at me as we went out of bounds. My mom, screams at the ref, and he turns around and smacks his ass at her. funny now...but they had to restrain my mom from kicking his ass.
Reply By dirtydawg1 --(71.60.190.39)-- Liondad, i know the name of the ref that counts out back while standing and calls the pin with his foot. He was at Mars and NA duals. Multiple coaches told me the story of him calling a pin by slamming his foot. Is the guy your talking about an overweight, dark haired fellow? I made sure to get his name so this lazy, worthless turd does not ref at any tourney we hold. If I thought the PIAA would punish this guy for his actions I would video him and send a cd to the PIAA. Something tells me that would be a waste of time, so I tell as many coaches as I can the man's name so maybe they won't invite him to their tourneys. On top of being lazy and incompetent, he is arrogant too!
Reply By Smom --(24.3.100.166)-- dirtydawg1
I agree with you we have video taped refs with that thought in mind. Would it be a waste of time? I am thinking it would be. We just need to get the names of the worst ones and hope that noone uses them again. Word of mouth is a powerful thing. The worst ref from Saturday was screaming and nasty to 6 year olds......give me a break for what they make a day they need to do a good job! During finals you would think they would take the time to do it right but more often than not they rush through and make the worst calls!
Reply By BBSpa1 --(71.253.38.32)-- One minor thing i would like to mention to anyone who is hosting a tournament and giving a t-shirt to the winner. ORDER SOME IN CHILDREN'S SIZES. I know its not a big deal but when a kid knows he is getting a shirt if he wins and when he does they hand a 6 yr old an adult small his excitement turns to wtf am i supposed to do with this! At least give him a large so i can wear it!
Reply By Badcat --(65.112.250.245)-- HA! BBSpa1 walking around with a Youth Champion shirt. THAT will make you look like a tough guy, eh? ;)
Reply By Liondad --(71.60.158.110)-- Dirtydawg...lol...That is him, so it is good to know I am not imagining things.
Badcat..That is Bruce (I think is his name) Haselrig he is Carlton's uncle, I like him he just tries to keep things loose. He was at Shippensburg when we were the for MAWA's you must not have seen him. I think he is in charge of a group of officials or something, not sure.
Reply By bison1 --(75.150.166.85)-- I think Hasselrig is a great ref. He doesn't call a scramble a takedown and reversal. I've seen him reffing college matches also. As far as the big shirts - when a mother orders the shirt awards - they fit. Of course at our tournament, there were folks complaining that they wanted them bigger even though they def fit the kid now. Just can't please every one.
Reply By BBSpa1 --(71.253.38.32)-- Badcat-Well it would look better than my belly hangin out of the bottom of the small! lol
